About Our Pre-K Class

In my Pre-K classroom, I place a high emphasis on social and emotional development. The responsive classroom approach helps to create a close community of learners in our classroom. We begin and end our day with morning and afternoon class meetings which help to foster community and build positive relationships in our classroom. Our classroom also has a safe space for children to go when they need a break. This cozy corner is intended to be a calming space where children can go to feel safe and practice regulating their emotions. This space is built right into our class library and is not meant to be a "time-out" space, rather a calming, safe space. The majority of our day is spent in learning centers that include, but are not limited to Math, ELA, S.T.E.A.M., Creative Arts, Dramatic Play, and Sensory Exploration. These centers change and evolve as we progress with our thematic units which include topics in All About Us, Animals, Earth and Environment, Space, Transportation, Change and Growth, Health and Safety, Food and Nutrition, etc. The curriculum implemented is largely adapted from NYC Pre-K for All, a rich instructional resource provided by the NYC Department of Education in order to support quality care and instruction for all preschool-age children. We are also implementing a new ELA curriculum this year school-wide through Wonders. This will be an exciting addition to our program.

Meaningful play will be at the core of our curriculum. It is well known that preschool-aged children learn best through experience and play by exploring the world around them and making their own discoveries. As a teacher, I facilitate the student’s learning by providing opportunities to help scaffold and guide children to reach academic goals.

It is my goal to create an inclusive, safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment by implementing an academic and social-emotional curriculum that ensures all students succeed and grow to the best of their abilities both academically and as members of society.
