My name is Mrs. Brooks. I am a reading teacher at McGraw Elementary School. I have a Master's Degree in Language Arts/ Reading and a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Education from the State University of Cortland. Before coming to McGraw as a full time teacher 21 years ago, I subbed in 5 different school districts K-12.I also worked as an assistant supervisor at a before and after school program, as a playground supervisor, as a teacher's aide, and I was a three year old preschool teacher.Currently, I teach reading to students in kindergarten through second grade. In ELA/reading, we learn many new vocabulary words and improve our reading and writing. We work in small groups with stories that are “just right” for your child. Students enjoy all types of texts: poetry, easy fiction, biography, newspapers, magazines, and chapter books. Independent reading is encouraged every day. We also connect reading with writing. Writing short responses and paragraphs prepare students for the state exams that they will be taking. My motto is if at first you don't succeed try, try, and try again.
