Women in Engineering Event

On Friday, October 26th, three ninth grade girls attended the Lockheed Martin Women in Engineering Event in Liverpool, NY.  Tehya Long, McKenzie Fuller, and Mini Stanton, accompanied by science teacher Jacqueline Niver, enjoyed a day full of problem-solving, a tour of the engineering complex, and a job fair where engineers described the field of engineering that they worked in.  At lunch, female engineers ate with the girls and chatted about what it is like being an engineer and how they ended up in their specific fields.  In the afternoon, the girls enjoyed an activity based on personality while the educators met to discuss how to encourage more girls to enter engineering.  Here are some things that the girls said about their experience:
McKenzie Fuller- “I liked seeing all the types of engineering and how to use them. I learned that not everything always works, but don’t give up- just think outside the box.”
Mini Stanton- “What I liked was that there are multiple opportunities in the engineering profession and that you don’t have to be the smartest to be an engineer.”
Tehya Long- “I liked seeing all the different jobs you can get with an engineering degree and having hands-on experiences.
All in all, it was a fun-filled day that hopefully inspired the next generation of engineers from McGraw to continue their educational path and possibly pursue this exciting field!
