N-6, with a 7-9 Mathematics concentration
This is my 32nd year teaching in McGraw. I started teaching here in July, 1985. I taught Summer school and then began teaching full time in September, 1985. Over the course of 32 years, I have taught students in every grade level 6-12. My primary teaching experience is in Algebra. I also taught at SUNY Cortland for the EOP program for 10 years.
A Little Bit About Me
I grew up in Cortland, graduating in 1980 from Cortland High School. I went to SUNY Albany for 2 years and then received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from SUNY Cortland. I spent much of my childhood in McGraw. My grandparents, Frank and Julia Ferris, lived on W. Academy St. in the village and I visited them all the time. My father, George Ferris, is a McGraw alumnus. He graduated in 1955.
My parents, George and Shellie Ferris, ran the snack bar at Cort-Lanes for several years. I can make a mean tullyburger or western omelet. I was pretty good on the grill.
My sister, Kathryn (Kathy) Ferris, taught Math at Cortland High School for 27 years. Unfortunately, she passed away in May, 2010 after a short battle with breast cancer. Her death was a life changing moment for me. I try to live my life in a way that will honor her. I present a scholarship in her memory to a senior at Cortland every year.
In 2012, I reconnected with an old friend, Don Bonawitz, and we were married in February, 2013. I have 3 step-children and 5 grandchildren and love being a Nana.
I am an avid collector of Mickey Mouse things and Kathryn collected Winnie the Pooh things.
To honor Kathryn...
"If ever there is a tomorrow that we are not together, there is one thing you should always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is : even if we're apart, I will always be with you in the heart."
