Eaglets in the Wild

Eaglets in the Wild!

This year we have an exciting new outdoor addition to our Pre-K curriculum! We will be outside for an hour of our instruction every single morning as long as it is above 20 degrees and not pouring rain. Because of this, your child must be prepared for the weather and elements! Contact the school or myself if you have any questions or concerns. The school is buying outdoor instructional tents to provide shelter for light rain and shade for hot summer days.

In the fall and spring your child will need: PLEASE LABEL!

  • Rain/muck boots and thick socks

  • Raincoat / waterproof jacket

  • Splashy pants / rain pants - not mandatory but will help keep your child much cleaner and not have to use as many extra clothes!

In the winter your child will need: PLEASE LABEL!

  • Waterproof snow boots and thick socks (wool or wool/silk blend socks are much warmer than cotton)

  • Waterproof snow pants / snow suit

  • Winter waterproof coat

  • Hat or earmuffs

  • Waterproof mittens (children struggle to put on gloves independently and the thin knit versions will not be warm enough for NY winters. I recommend snow stopper brand mittens or a similar style)

  • Not mandatory, but long underwear bottoms and tops will help your child stay warm under snow pants if they tend to run colder

*(wool, wool/silk or synthetic materials will keep your child much warmer than cotton)*

I recommend using a separate bag (such as a reusable grocery bag tote) to take outdoor gear to and from school if they aren’t wearing it home. Our recess is right before dismissal, so some days children will be wearing everything home if they have outdoor recess during the winter months. If it’s too cold (feels like 20 or below) and we have indoor recess, children can leave their snow pants at school if you prefer.

Please note: I am not allowed to apply sunscreen or bug repellent to your child. Feel free to do this before you send them in to school and check for ticks after school. If we see any ticks on your child you will be informed immediately so action can be taken. Our grounds workers do treat for ticks, but it is not always a guarantee!

Eaglets in the Wild is an enriching educational supplement to increase the integrity of our play-based Pre-K curriculum! Students will engage in child-led sensory learning experiences, ecological literacy, and healthy living by connecting children to nature in our community. The “Wild Work” done during this time would consist of exploratory invitations based on the thematic units that we are learning in the indoor classroom. All outdoor learning directly connects to our standards in a highly engaging way. Activities such as mud kitchens, pond discovery, rappelling, igloo engineering, nature journaling, and many other STEAM projects will be completed throughout the year. Allowing our students more opportunities for healthy outdoor risk taking, resiliency, and assessing their own limits and abilities are all vital componenets in early learning development.
