On February 7, students in Regents Physics visited the SUNY Cortland planetarium. During their visit, students collected data about the location of the sun during the summer and winter solstices and the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. Using this data, the students were then able to sketch the sun’s analemma and compare it to what was projected in the planetarium. Students could also apply Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation and the circular motion equations learned earlier this year to explain why orbits are elliptical. They were also taken on a “tour through the solar system” at the end of their visit. Thank you, SUNY Cortland, for this experience!
